The September 8th meeting of the South Shore Outboard Association was called to order by Commodore Alan Akerstrom at 7:57 PM. The Meeting was held at The Thompson’s Barn in Mansfield, Massachusetts and there were sixteen members present.
Secretary’s Report - The Minutes of the August Meeting were accepted as printed in the Newsletter.
Treasurer’s Report – Treasurer Dick Currier presented the Treasurer’s report as of September 8, 2010 and it was accepted by the membership. It was voted to pay all outstanding invoices. A motion was made and seconded to remit a check in the amount of $350.00 to the Rutland Regional Cancer Center. The funds for this donation were generated from the sale of event tee shirts at the Hubbarton, Vermont race.
Membership – Membership Chairman Mike Akerstrom reported that the membership numbers are as follows: We currently have 94 members comprised of: 71 – Racing; 13 – non racing; and 10 Life members. The membership list is now posted on the website.
Equipment –
All of the Club equipment and trailers are in Taunton.
In view of the fact that we had some issues with radios at Haverhill, Alan A. looked into the cost of new marine radios. After a rather lengthy discussion relating to number of units needed and the respective costs, Steve N. made a motion to purchase the radios. He explained that the Club could then submit a request to be reimbursed by the Region for this expense as permitted in the Region By-Laws. If additional funds are required, they would be drawn from the funds previously donated to the Club by Charlie Gonyea, which were specifically earmarked for safety equipment. The motion was passed.
Website – The Commodore will have the Clubs 2010 APBA Certificate of Good Standing posted on the site.
Standish, Maine – Books are closed for another season.
Hubbardton, Vermont – A check in the amount of $350.00 will be forwarded to Terry Morse who will then present the donation to the Rutland Regional Cancer Center.
Haverhill, Mass – Steve N. and Alan A. will be meeting with the Crescent Yacht Club to recap this year’s event. The marathon was a big hit and they have requested that it be lengthened or possibly be run each day. Steve N. explained the difficulty with running it each day is coordinating with the tides and still having enough time to run our regular closed course program. There were several post race newspaper articles on the race.
Taunton, Mass – Bill Giles reported that we should be all set for this weekend.
Jason Thompson will bring trash barrels.
SSOA will remove the swimming floats for the Park.
Equipment set up on Friday. All are invited!
The drags will run from 11:00AM to Noon.
The Taunton Cup is polished and ready for the winner of the largest class.
Saturday Plaques have been received from Lela.
Steve N. will bring the medallions for Sunday’s awards.
Kingston, NH – This will be an APBA – CBF joint sanction. We have not had a lot of feedback from the CBF Drivers. We will only do a Can-AM Challenge if we have sufficient Canadian Drivers. We will be running three days of racing in two with two days being run on Saturday. We will also run the first SSOA All Star Race as the last event of the day on Sunday. The five lap race will consist of a twelve boat field with a beach start. To be selected to the field, you must be an SSOA member and be ranked in the top three in SSOA points from the following classes: 20SSH, 25SSH, CSH and OSY400. There will be a winner take all purse of $250.00.
Banquet – Harriet Thompson reserved the Chateau Restaurant in Norton, Massachusetts for the Annual Banquet. The banquet will be held November 20, 2010. The room is reserved from 7-11PM. The Restaurant bar will be open prior to the banquet for an informal cocktail hour. (www.chateaurestaurant.com)
60th Anniversary Celebration – We have been in contact with several of our older members and they are looking forward to the event. However, there are many more former members out there that need to be tracked down. If you receive this newsletter and know the whereabouts of anyone that was ever a member of SSOA, let Steve Noury know their contact information so that we can send them a Banquet notice. Time is running short……..
2011 Officers – Per the Club By-Laws, a nominating committee was formed for the purpose of comprising a slate of candidates for the election of the 2011 officers. They have recommended that the current slate of Officers be nominated for the 2011 positions.
Region One Annual Fall Meeting – The Region One meeting will be held at the Mason Building, 8 Church Street, Kingston, New Hampshire on October 17, 2010. This is the white building at the race site and the meeting will start at 1:30PM. The Region Secretary will be notifying APBA of this date and Region One members will be notified by email and a hard copy notice via postal delivery.
Safety – Region Chairman Charlie Gonyea reported at the previous meeting that APBA continues to emphasize the importance of the Risk Managers responsibilities at race events. A more defined role for the Risk Manager is being developed by APBA.
Meeting was adjourned at 9:46PM. Next Meeting will be October 13th at the Thompson’s Barn.
